RW&CO. celebrate 10 years in the Canadian fashion industry this year.

I must admit I haven't been to a mall in the past 6 months, but always love to wander through every location I come across, the simple designs with a hint of flare allows for a classic wardrobe. The comfort and affordability stand the test of time. I only just got rid of a staple sweater from the thriving His and Hers store that can be found in most malls across the country.

RW&CO's publicity team are working on getting the company connected to their customers online and have recently just launched a Facebook Fan Page and a series of videos so adorable you'll wonder why you don't shop there all the time.

I'm pretty surprised a lot of Canadian companies haven't taken the video story approach to connect with their customers. I feel this is sort of a turning point for major retail businesses as they catch up to the "modern" ways of advertising and promotions.

Parkshow Fall 2009

With a population of over a million it'd be very difficult to call Calgary a small town. However, it is at times accurate to say that everybody knows everybody. Communities and groups that make up the city are not autonomous, they're all interconnected, it's the only way for these communities to survive.

Parkshow, the fundraiser for Parksale brings together the creative communities of Calgary and supports the independent artists who have eschewed the consumer driven sensibilities of the current generation to slave away at doing what they love.

Kara Chomistek, Parkshow Event Coordinator, explains how the idea came about.

"There was a group of us from the University and ACAD talking about how there is not much opportunity to make a profit while selling their [the artists] work." Chomistek points out there are a lot of opportunities to show their work, however there are usually high commission fees or high vendor fees. "We though it would be kind of cool just to have a space where people can come sell their stuff and chill out on the grass."

Held once a year in June on the University of Calgary campus, the event is void of entrance fees or vendor fees. To make the sale a reality it seemed natural to create a fundraiser like Parkshow.

"Parkshow is a fundraiser so that we can continue to make this a free event for all involved," says Chomistek. The first Parkshow Spring 2009, took place in February at the Artlife Gallery. The small venue was filled to capacity as models walked the runway in two rooms, showcasing the upcoming talents of Calgary's fashion community.

For the Fall fashion season, Parkshow Fall 2009 takes place September 12 at a new venue. Inspired by the floor to ceiling organ at the Arrata Opera Centre, this seasons' show will feature fashions from 13 local designers, including an online vintage shop and a jeweler.

The art will be on display the whole event with doors opening at 9 p.m. After the 10 p.m. show there will be a special performance by House of Dangerkat. Kaiti Pasqualotto's troupe of the wackest dancers Calgary has to offer is the perfect way to get the party started. Pasqualotto will be featuring her scamper pants which will also be available for sale at the midnight sample sale along with dance party to take place after the performance.

With the shorter days and cooler nights upon us it's the time of the year to celebrate and embrace the short season full of the hottest fashions.

Quick Lesson: Hermès

With the grand opening of Hermès looming in the near future, Calgary Fashion has decided to compile a short introduction to the label, its history, its key pieces, and what it means to have such a prestigious boutique opening in Calgary.

Hermès, founded by Thierry Hermès in 1837, began as a leather goods line specializing in harnesses, saddles, and other equestrian goods. The company became an success among royalty and those who could afford the fine workmanship. Hermès developed a reputation for impecctable quality, materials, and tailoring that the company expanded to include luggage, leather golf jackets, scarves, smaller leather goods, perfume, jewelry, homewares and eventually clothing. To this day Hermès remains a family-run business, six-generations deep, and stays true to its roots in luxury.

It also means Calgary is attracting major design houses, making it inevitable that the downtown core will attract more distinguished brands. The arrival of Hermès is also bitter sweet. Will a Hermès scarf or handbag be the new Coach bag? Will the brand's reputation for craftmanship be undermined for its status to 'one-up' those who cannot afford the smallest article? Will Calgary's consumers understand the history of the label, and appreciate it for its longevity and unwavering commitment? Does Calgary even need a Hermès considering the city is dedicated to casual wear? Time will tell whether Hermès will be appreciated or become another 'pretty' thing.

Valentino: The Last Emperor

Finally Calgary is being blessed with the new Valentino documentary, The Last Emperor. It's opening tomorrow night at the Uptown Stage & Screen, the first show is at 7:10 p.m. and runs until August 20th, playing nightly Monday through Sunday at 7:10 p.m. & 9:15 p.m. and matinees on the weekend at 12:20 p.m.

There's a good chance you'll run into some Calgary Fashion folk. We're all pretty excited to see such an amazing and inspiring fashion designer front and center on the silver screen. I personally don't have anything Valentino red, but I will try my best to look fabulous and so should you!

I caught up with Lexie Stewart, a personal fashion muse and aspiring designer, actress, and all-around artiste to ask her opinion on clothes, trends, and the most fashionable cities.

Q. What stared your interest in fashion?

A. It must be my mothers fault. Growing up she always bought me those toy plastic heels from Toys’R’Us, and dressed me up in frilly dresses with crinolines underneath. She’s a sewer, so we could always make whatever clothes I wanted. By the time I was in grade 6, I was wearing lime green leggings and unheard-of Uggs. Around that time Lizzy Maguire intrigued me because no other girl dressed like her, so I was very daring with clothes. Then I started paying attention to designers and their runways.

Q. Who have become your favorite designers?

A. Chloe. Definitely. Chloe has always been the top for me. I love the oversized, male (but feminine) clothes. Ellie Saab has the most incredible dresses. Chanel accessories, shoes, and dresses are always beautiful and classic. I love Balenciaga purses and Christian Louboutin shoes are to die for. He is without a doubt the god of shoe making.

Q. Any pieces by your favorite designers you'd like to get your hands on?

A. Christian Louboutin shoes. For sure. I’d die to have a pair. I’ve been looking at a lot of sale sites that you can buy them from for around $150.00, but I’m not fully sure if they’re all legit! If I had the figure, a Herve Leger dress would be awesome. Once you look good in one of those dresses, you know you’ve made it in the fitness department. Also, a padded, chain strapped Chanel purse. So classy.

Q. And if you can't have designer pieces, where do you shop in Calgary?

A.Zara, Zara, Zara. H&M, Joe Fresh, Gap, Aldo.

Q. You and your mom sew a lot of your clothes - how'd you get started?

A. My mom always made her own clothes growing up. She got me started. Being able to sew has come in handy. I found a dress by Chanel that I adored, so I recreated it for my grad! And I did the same thing for my friend with an Oscar De La Renta dress recently. I’ve grown up around sewing so I was sort of just born into it, lucky for me!

Q. What are the best and worst trends, in your opinion?

A. Hmm worst fashion trend. SO many people say Uggs on this question. I don’t give a crap. They’re so comfortable and handy, it doesn’t even matter, you don’t have to look perfect ALL the time. I love mine. So worst fashion trend? I can’t think of one specific item, but for me, it’s 80’s clothing. I’d have to say the 80’s were the worst for fashion and I really hope it doesn’t continue to come back full throttle. There are certain pieces that are 80’s inspired that when put together with something else can look awesome. Best fashion trend, I’m not sure if this counts but, empire waist. It looks good on almost everybody, big boobs, small boobs, long waist, short waist. It’s pretty, it’s feminine. With long dresses it looks ethereal, on short baby doll dresses it’s cute.

Q. Thinking about your closet, what can't you live without?

A.Honestly? Leggings. Definitely. I’m very much about comfort. At the moment, probably my gladiator sandals too. They’re nothing special but, they’re nicer than flip flops. They took me all through Europe. Also, my black tube skirt. I remember seeing one on Ashley Olsen, and I had to have that skirt. So I retreated to the sewing room and whipped myself up one from an old stretchy black maternity dress that was my mothers.

Q. What's the most fashionable city you've traveled to?

A. I would have to say London. It’s just because so many women there have real styles, whereas in many other cities, lots of people just dress the same. Both men and women are more daring with their style, and it helps that there are a lot more clothing stores to shop at for more variety. There’s everything from grunge to fashionable but clean and classy. Style there seems effortless.

Q. Where would you like to travel next?

A. Scottland and Ireland. It has nothing to do with fashion or the shopping. But Scottland DOES have a topshop...

Calgary-born designer Travis Taddeo is featured in Z!NK Magazine's summer issue. In the article Tina Christopoulos draws attention to Taddeo's commitment to providing individualistic designs to his young clientele. "What I really want people to get from my clothes is the knowledge that individuality is important" he says. "It's OK not to wear the same thing as everyone else." Calgary Fashion could not agree more. The world of fashion can be inspiring but also extremely disappointing. Rather than being roused by runway looks, many people seem to reiterate looks from head to toe. The increasing trend of copying runway looks verbatim, leaves some of us at Calgary Fashion disheartened. Since when did fashion become so rigid? I remember counting 17 Coach bags, 5 pairs of Uggs, 8 pairs of Ray-Bans and several outfits covered in labels during a half-hour coffee break on 17th Ave. Is this a part of Calgary's conservative nature? To have what everyone else has? Or is it because Calgary is isolated from the fashion industry's glorious individuality?

We salute Travis Taddeo for his undying motivation to infuse Canada's fashion industry with a punch of unfamiliarity. His latest collection will be shown at the upcoming Toronto Fashion Week in October, followed by a release in the US.

RIP THE RUNWAY 2009

What an inspiring show, so much talent
I have never been to something like it.
So much hard work went into it and it
showed.

Backstage was chaotic, full of rehearsal's
hairspray,clothing,half naked models and
photographers it was great.
When it came down to the actual show
it started with a dance number which a friend
of mine Sabrina.C had put together it really
set the tone for the whole show, the mc was up
beat and super fun, the DJ was good and got
the attenders really hyped for it all!

there was even a minute of silence for the
great Michael Jackson which got me a bit
teary eyed.

Congratulations to all the designers
You all did an amazing job, I am
thankful that your all representing
Calgary with your art and fashion.

Last month at Factory Party #6, Calgary Fashion presented Afrikana. The celebration of Africa has been big this year on the runways, Marc Jacobs and Junya Watanbe are only a few that played with the African theme for this season. This year Nigeria's Arise Magazine, Nigeria's new fashion glossy who have been referred to as Nigeria's Interview Magazine also showcased their 4 part runway show, Arise African Fashion Collective at the Mercedes New York Fashion Week for Spring09. So really it kind of made sense for us to take that route, why not show that Africa is very much a part of Calgary as well as Canada?

It was important to showcase Afrikana for us as in 2001, Canada was home to 300,000 individuals of African origin with 23,000 Africans living in Alberta (Statistics Canada 2007).

According to FFWD Magazine: “Alberta’s oil boom, however, has caused a dramatic increase in Calgary’s African population. Official statistics aren’t available, but the Sudanese community claims that it has doubled in the last five years, from 6,000 in 2002 to 12,000 in 2007. Likewise, the small Nigerian community of 400 in 1996 has grown to well over 10,000 today.”

As our city continues to grow we feel it important to promote members of the fashion community who are actively involved in the fashion industry no matter what category they may belong to.

Songkla to be re-invented

After the sudden departure of Smyth&Kang last week, I was shocked and disappointed when I received a Facebook message from Tung Vo, informing me that Songkla would be closing it doors soon and to come by soon as they are having a 30%-70% off sale.

And while it's true that the racks and shelves would be cleared and the doors closed, it is only a temporary close.

While I tried on a few dresses, Tung explained that after they clear out the merchandise and close the doors for a month or so, they'll be re-opening as a studio as opposed to a retail store. With a new partnership in the making, Songkla will refocus their efforts to making their own clothing and selling it from their studio.

For myself, this is good and bad news. Not a streetwear type of gal, I nevertheless found a number of cute dresses at Songkla over the years and now I'll have to search for those same labels that Songkla carried elsewhere.
The good news for me is that Tung will be continuing making clothes, which means I can add to the two coats I have purchased and treasure. Both are items that I'll no doubt have for years to come and will continue to tell people where I got them.

I look forward to seeing what's to come in the next few months as Calgary's fashion landscape continues to change. But before they close the doors I strongly suggest you snap up whatever they have left before it's gone!

Being a fashion blogger comes with many perks and opportunities, it also takes a lot of perseverance and a good amount of dedication and self determination to be a successful fashion blogger. As a fashion blogger, you have to be on top of the latest and the now of fashion and Holt Renfrow in Canada have caught on to this.

According to Holt Renfrew's Creative Director John Gerhardt:

"Bloggers have become the fashion world's new celebrities," says Gerhardt. "They're knowledgeable and influential contributors to the modern media landscape. Their opinions and visuals are relevant, creative and thought-provoking, providing a constant source of inspiration. We are honoured to pay homage to their style."

Last week, the luxury Canadian brand, unveiled six store front windows dedicated to Garancé Dore, Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, Jane Aldridge of Sea Of Shoes, Canada's star fashion blogger Anita Clarke of I Want I Got and the ever visually captivating Tommy Ton of Jak + Jil and of course the ever fabulous Bryan Boy.

I was thinking of how lucky we at Calgary Fashion are to have access to amazing photographers, and was reminded of a lovely picture I had stumbled on a few months back. To my surprise, it was a photograph by the ever eclectic and quirky Tim Walker. Balloons, bubble gum, airplanes, and fields of flowers are just a few of the props this legend has used.

A lot goes into our fashion shows. Two and a half years ago when I started Calgary Fashion I had no idea how we would evolve into this amazing fashion power house jam packed with all the talents and effort that is even necessary to make such things happen.

This time around for Factory Party 6 we decided to go with the title Afrikana that focused on Africa meeting The Factory Party. Basically my roots meeting The Factory Party through some of Alberta's talented designers. My apartment became our dressing room filled with over 30 people and these are some behind the scenes shots. As we continue to post the pictures from FP #6, the details of what it all took to make this happen will be unveiled.

Product Test: Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara

A couple of weeks ago some of us at CF were contacted to try out a new Maybelline product, the Pulse Perfection Mascara

Like many, I'm always searching for the perfect mascara - each seems to be good at one thing, not all, and at range of different prices.

The idea of a pulsating mascara is slightly terrifying. The eye is a precious area, a vibrating wand full of mascara near that perfect orb doesn't seem like a smart idea. Nevertheless, I wanted to give the try. If this product works, at the affordable price (I believe it's under $20, but as it's not on sale yet, I'm not entirely positive) it's definitely a bargain.

I was sent 8 mascaras for myself and friends to try out. I gave a few to some friends at my day job, regular girls who wear a little bit of makeup at work and maybe a teeny bit more when they go out.

It just so happened that when I received the mascaras to try out I was getting my makeup done for the Calgary Fashion Factory Party Show. A little hesitant myself to try out a pulsating mascara, I gave it to Olga Onulov, CF's makeup artist extraordinaire, to apply for me.

It took her a bit to get the product on to the wand, but surprisingly it went on smooth and easily. Sure it felt odd, but I was amazed at how long it made my lashes.

First time use all it did was make the lashes long, which is great, but it clumped. I got similar feedback from my co-workers. My supervisor, and others, found the button to turn on the vibrations too close to the end, and used the mascara without the vibrations. On it's own, it's a great mascara without the vibes.

I took all the feedback into consideration when I used the mascara on my own for the first time. I found a grip on the wand and button that wasn't awkward and I used it on top of the lashes as opposed to under. The first couple of coats were lengthening but they did clump. A few hours later I reapplied and found that this coat separated the lashes like I wanted it to in the first place.

Overall?
Give it a try, and really try it. It takes a little getting used to the vibrations but once you find what works for you it's comparable to other more expensive mascaras that don't vibrate. And the vibrating factor is cool.

WeAr diverges from the predictable, it's content is engaging, dabbling in all areas of fashion including store displays and interior spaces, and provides up-to-the-minute information from the fashion centers to obscure niches throughout the world. I wouldn't classify WeAr as suitable material to lazily skim through while waiting to buy milk, but something I would buy and happily keep rather than recycling.

I go out of my way to get to Edmonton at least once a season solely to spend my time (and money) at Gravity Pope's clothing store, Tailored Goods. From Robert Geller glasses to Peter Jensen sweaters- and everything in-between- Tailored Goods never fails to impress. And never more than this season!

I got an excited phone call from a friend this morning informing me that my prayers had been answered- Liberty of London prints used in a collaboration with French design house Cacharel! Once the go-to prints of Carnaby Street during the swinging sixties, today Liberty of London has stepped up their signature floral prints while keeping true to the original feel. Cacharel has used vintage prints in lovely blues, pinks, peaches, and navies in it's Spring/Summer 09 collaboration with Liberty. I watched "Revolutionary Road" for the first time last night, and besides the incredible performances by the ever lovely Kate Winslet and smoking Leo Di Caprio, I couldn't help but squeal at every costume on the screen. The tailored suits and dashing hats! Tiny waists and billowing skirts! And above all else, coiffed hair and a good cigarette. I sometimes wish I had been born during the nifty fifties, and this movie sent me wishing again.

Beyond the beauty of the clothes, the light in which the film has been shot makes everything look twice as bright and ethereal. Kate and Leo wear muted tones and lots of crisp white, making them look polished as their characters fall apart on screen. Costume designer Albert Wolsky has captured perfectly the time and, most importantly, used the clothing to convey who the characters are. Bravo! Now I just been to find some fitted tops and high waisted shorts.

The word on the street has been that Edmonton carries a certain je ne sais quoi when it comes to fashion. It has been reported on many occasions the home of the Oilers has more fashion conscious individuals than Calgary does, so Melissa and I went to see what all the fuss was about.

Nothing could prepare us for the amount of style presence Whyte Ave holds. The scenery may dwindle from store to store but when you hit the right spots, you hit the right spots.

Darren took us on a whirlwind of a tour and introduced us first to Bridget Smatlan.

Bridget is a designer based in Edmonton and exudes confidence and sweetness. She works out of her sweet, girly studio covered in lilac walls and photographs complete with hardwood floors and heavy machinery. Bridget's attitude towards her line of work impressed us the most. Very relaxed and confident as well as sure of a process that works for her.

Last friday was the Recycle Denim Manics hosted by Leo Boutique and Nudie Jeans and what a great turnout! Artlife Gallery was packed from wall to wall with fashion designers and lovers and featured some of the very talented calgary designers like Kendall Yellowhorn, Paul Hardy, Taryn Mckay, Adejoke Taiwo, Haithem Elkadiki, and Diella Ocran.

Of all my weaknesses, shoes are the worst. I used to think that shoes weren't anything compared to the luxurious fabrics, drapings, and cuts of clothing, then I felt quality leather. And discovered Tracey Neuls, a shoe maker and designer from Winnipeg. Her shoes are more art than footwear, and each pair is signed by the cobbler who made them. The leathers are dip-died, painted, and soft and smooth as butter. AND Neul's has used vintage fabrics (with gold paint) to cover shoes. So really, everyone wins. Split into three categories, the designs within each section encapsulating a certain feel (and price range). Currently working out of London, England, the shoe wizard has her own lovely shop/workshop just off of Bond Street. If Marie Antoinette were alive, Tracey Neuls would be her personal cobbler.

Yesterday I was looking around and researching Azzedine Alaia when I came accross "Made With Sweet Love". The site was started by Whitney Lee, where she latch-hooks pornography into rugs AND on top of that she sells custom kits so you can make them yourself! Whitney's artist statements are on point, no pun intended, and drive home the depth of these usable works of art. With the "recession" among us you could have weekly tea/rug hooking parties like our grandparents! Sorta.

Traditionally a combination of masculine and feminine elements, androgyny in the contemporary fashion world has quickly become a prominent flagship in the collections of many of this centuries most noted designers. As the parameters of what is considered to be socially acceptable in our society in terms of garments have shifted from taboo to please-do, a new generation of experimental styling has emerged amongst the aesthetically oriented alike.

The intrigue I've had with this concept over this past year has left me baffled as to how to effortlessly re-invent myself into a dichotomized pedestrian strolling through the streets without looking like a total buffoon? The answer: own your look. So, with my new found inspiration, I've been slowly trying to create a harmonious mix of what I believe to be a balance of femme et monsieur. But who really knows anyway, right? Personally, I think that straddling the fine line of fashion adds interest and keeps people guessing slightly longer than they'd like to be, so why not take some risks and see what happens?

Today I put together some mens outfits for a fashion shoot this weekend. One of the cornerstone outfits is a 3 piece suit from a line called Nom De Guerre. I pulled it from Gravity Pope Tailored Goods in Edmonton, this store is the destination for fashion North of Calgary.

Nom De Guerre is truly on another level and it is a real treat to have the opportunity in Alberta to add any of their pieces to your wardrobe.The next closest place to find them is Seattle...not that I'm adverse to traveling to the birth place of plaid...er I mean grunge.

Just check out the inspiration for the 2009 Spring/Summer: "The "Storm and Stress" collection is an amalgamation of a range of influences resulting in the creation of an ideal expression of youth.

Corresponding to Sturmund Drang, the Spring Summer 2009 collection, combines history and myth in a free expression of extremes albeit, with the parameters of military ideologies and references.

The result is a mythic subculture of boys, untainted by the weight of reality that might prove adverse to idealism, who are instead, driven to extremes of character by a sense of hyper-idealism.

Therefore, the clothing is in actuality, a proposal for a uniform to outfit a conceptual regiment. The resultant Spring/Summer 2009, collection takes cues from early cavalry units and regiments of various European forces, blending these into an amalgamated uniform.

"The pieces of these proposed uniforms are fabricated in light blues and various grays, colors mimicking the horizon line; then, these base colors are set off by midnight blue and white, elemental colors of regimental dress clothing." ~NDG.

If only everyone's first job involved flying to an exotic location for a photo shoot. For Calgary model Stephen Kroeger, his first modeling gig was just that. The twenty-year-old university student is already signed with four agencies and has lived in New York City and Greece for work. After his gym teacher suggested he go talk to an agency about a future in modeling, Stephen signed with Mode. Kroeger, in Greece working at the moment, was at his construction job last summer when he got a call from his manager. "My first real photo shoot was really exciting...I got a call telling me I had been direct booked to do an editorial for Sir magazine...in the jungle in Columbia." From there, things started picking up. Kroeger spent January in New York, living in Queens. While it seems like a dream, Kroeger says it's frustrating to be living in a different city, or country, and trying to get work. Unlike anything that the hockey player and sports enthusiast had experienced, the lack of work got to be a drag. With not much to do, Kroeger says, "I started to miss home quite a bit; my family friends, and definitely the food."

A cold winter in January was soon replaced by his current stint in Greece, where beach time and site-seeing is on the agenda, along with many a go-see. Group go-sees are tough, says Kroeger, as you try and stand out among several other models and have no chance to talk one-on-one with any of the booking agents. When asked what his favorite go-see was, Kroeger replied, "My favorite go-sees or castings are the ones I'm able to go to by myself and actually have some time to talk with the editor." The personable Canadian is most enthusiastic though about all the different people he's met, with models from the USA, South Africa, South America, and even Israel at the hotel where Kroeger is living. The country with the most model representatives though? Canada of course.

The job has definitely changed his views on the fashion industry. "Before I started modeling, the only things I knew about modeling came from the movie Zoolander and tabloid magazines." Now, Kroeger has come to see he's among equals, with most of the models he's met being either university students or graduates. Warned that editors, photographers, and booking agents were rude, Kroeger says he's never had a bad experience with anyone and has met incredibly nice people. As for his plans for the future, Kroeger thinks he'll model while he finishes university, and maybe for a few years after, but can't see himself getting into it as a career. "I don't want to end up like Johnny Drama, from Entourage, going to castings and fighting for jobs."

Snowboarding, Skating, and Rugby, Oh My!

This coming Saturday, Canadian supermodel Daria Werbowy is hosting an auction and party to benefit her cause of choice- Stoked.
Werbowy is an avid athlete, spending her down time snowboarding, skiing, and getting down and dirty playing rugby.
When her friend Sal Masekela (the host of X Games) let her in on Stoked's cause, Werbowy signed up instantly.
Stoked helps underprivileged and at risk teens attend sports camps. From surfing to skiing, the teens get a chance of the lifetime to travel places they wouldn't otherwise be able to go and challenge their inner athlete.
Werbowy has even donated her own used equipment to Stoked and to the auction this weekend.

Celebrating the Beautiful

This past week, the Metropolitan Museum of Art held its annual Costume Institute Gala. This year's theme? A celebration of the world's true top models and their influence on designers. Marc Jacobs acted as honorary chair, along with Justin Timberlake, Anna Wintour, and of course, Kate Moss. Models from decades past -and present- were remembered and honored. From Linda Evangelista to Veruschka, Twiggy to Cindy Crawford, famous photos of the models, as well as video footage of the catwalk, and iconic dresses worn by the beauties acted as decoration.

While Naomi Campbell and Gisele Bundchen were immortalized, I couldn't help but wonder who would be next on the list of the world's most beloved models. Coco Rocha and Daria Werbowy are among Canada's biggest models, but what about the slew of unknowns waiting to make it big? I did a little sleuthing and came up with four Canadian models who have landed impressive campaigns and walked for the world's top designers. Kate Moss, watch out.

1. Taryn Davidson

Known for her winning smile, the Ontario born walked on all the top runways this fall, including Celine and Versace. Among the many photo spreads she's down, Davidson worked with Terry Richardson for French Vogue's annual calendar this year.

2. Matt Gordon

This Albertan heartthrob is known for his height. With friends like Jessica Stam and Claudia Schiffer though, who needs anything else?

3. Tara Gill

Friend of Taryn Davidson, Tara is known for her dark eyes and bright smile. These obviously worked in her favor because she opened Vanessa Bruno's Paris show in the spring of 2008.

4. Simon Nessman

With his head of uncontrollable curls, Simon is a staple for all the biggest shows during fashion weeks. Currently, this BC boy is one of Givenchy's faces.

Fora do Brasil!

Despite today's brief snow flurries, my excitement at joining up with Calgary Fashion made me remember the dreamy dresses showcased during America's Next Top Model last night by Brazilian designer Cris Barros.

Barros' designs floated off the models as they tromped around her store in ruffling pastel confections. A former model herself, Barros started designing seven years ago.

Her inspirations are pulled from the process of designing her collections, past trips and experiences, and she has established herself as not only competent in her profession, but a designer to be reckoned with.

Modeling led the beautiful Brazilian native to completing a degree in Design. After interning with another local designer, Barros ran off to Milan to get her Masters and worked with Stephen Janson- former Dianne Von Furstenburg and Yves Saint Laurent designer- before founding her own company in 2002.

With two stores in Brazil, I can only hope that her floaty frocks start making their way to North America ASAP. Simple prints and light colors, floating fabrics draped and pinned to perfections, and finally pops of deep blue, purple, and grey all combine to make my idea of the perfect summer clothes...and if it doesn't stop snowing...I'm moving to Brazil.

It's No Surprise

It is odd how topics concerning fashion and the environment are frequently paired with eye-rolling, perplexed expressions, and an air of dismissal. It is also odd how discussions concerning methods of how to mend our planet always seems so distant. It seems as though things are stuck, and no one seems to believe that we currently possess the intellect and technology to remove ourselves from our damaging ways. Fashion is not an exception. But why can't fashion be synonymous with sustainability? Is it because most design houses have shifted from exclusivity to mass-production? A fear of low-profit margins? We can theorize until we are blue in the face, as to why has fashion and the environment been made into a laughable subject, but it is important to know that there are changes being made.

The London College of Fashion and the University for the Creative Arts in the UK have added eco-fashion courses to their postgraduate lineup, Alexander McQueen's ballsy Fall 2009 RTW collection alluded to our disgusting rates of consumption, and Stella McCartney continues to be green and forces people to deal with it. It is hard not to ignore these small but not isolated acts of green in fashion.

What about in Canada? What are we doing that will lessen our carbon footprint in fashion? Surprisingly a lot. Here are some Canadian designers and companies that are green, sustainable, and just as cool. It is no surprise eco-fashion is on the rise, because it makes so much sense.

Last Friday Calgary Fashion attended and held a fashion exhibition at the 5Th Factory Party presented by THE MODERN LEISURE. The night was incredible! After a few stressful but fun weeks, every one's hard work paid off and we successfully produced an effective fashion show.
Thanks to Kim, who was my trusty side-kick through-out the entire process.
I'd like to thank all the designers, Cailtlin Power, Andrea Parton, Susan Clarahan, Hannah Grant, and Tiffany Wollman. Your creations deserve to be seen!
To all the models for taking time out of their days for fittings and the grueling 'waiting around' part. You are all beautiful!
Leandra and Olga, thank you for the fierce makeup and hair.
Garret, Jordan, Steph and Kara, you are lifesavers! What would happen without you??

Down To Earth Week Fashion Show - HUGE SUCCESS

The Down to Earth Week fashion show held at SAIT today was a phenomenal success. The response from the crowd, retailers, and general public was receptive, warm, and full of encouragement. Thank-you for everyone that came out to support Calgary's independent, eco-friendly and sustainable fashion businesses. With events like this, we move closer to smashing the eco/fashion paradox and perceived contradiction. Garrett Naccarato: First of all tell me a little bit about yourself!

Aimee Qiu: My name is Aimee Qiu. With a degree in Fashion Design from China I came to Canada looking for an opportunity in the Fashion industry. After arriving, I realize without the language and education (Western Education), it is almost impossible to persuade a career here so I went on for another degree in Graphic Design at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Four years at ACAD, I kept the passion for fashion (mainly drawing part), and learned to work with other graphic elements, now I work as a graphic designer, freelance illustrator and painter which I think will be my life time career from now on.

GN: Most of your artwork in the show is directed towards fashion. What made/or influenced you to work with this type of genre?

AQ: Like I mentioned at my last answer, I love drawing and my degree in Fashion Design helped me develop the skill and interests in figure drawing. Plus I think female figures are very sexy and beautiful, it can stand by itself as a master piece. I love the female figures and I am very pleased I can represent them on the canvas with my own interpretation.

GN: What are the type of mediums you work on? And what do you prefer to work with?
AQ: I work with acrylic ink and marker on canvas. I love collect different type of paper and paint on them sometimes. I love Chinese rice paper, it smells really good (laughs) for their unique texture and soft surface. Now I am working on some big piece with rice paper and I am very excited to see how it will turn out.

GN: Fashion illustrations are a huge part of the industry, have you or do you plan to use your talents to help present sketches for designers?
AQ: With the drawing skill, I have earned many personal clients. It is easier to show them sketches of what I am talking about. Also in my last job, I used my skill to present work for some bigger international clients.

GN: Favorite designers? Trends? Looks? Favorite Artists?

AQ: To be honest, I am not a big brand name fan but I think some brands can really make a difference in the world. My favourite designer is John Galliano, I have been following his career since early 90's and I have painted many figures that I think will be perfect for his collection. He has such a unique interpretation for fashion! My favorite artist is Egone Schiele.

GN: I've noticed that you have a some newer pieces that definitely stand out from your illustrations. What made you chose a different style for these?

AQ: The newer pieces came when I had the Creative Block. I have many painting at home and I have been looking at them for a long time...

One Story: There is the half finished painting beside my couch since last year and I just could not finish it. After my short trip to Toronto, I started reading graffiti books, watching weird movies with my boyfriend, taking photos of weird textures I found on the road, or sometimes just draw down whatever come into my mind, one day I just bought cans of spear paint and experience with them. That day I realize the freedom of being an creative person, whatever medium, whatever situation, whatever you can image, you can put on canvas. That day I finished the first painting("The Rubbit") in a new style. With this freedom, I started working with the painting beside my couch...I guess people liked it because that is the first piece I sold in my show at The Gallery!

GN: What are some words of advice you could give to starting out artists trying to get their work out there?

AQ: I really think as artists we should know how to networking and market ourselves. I do not mean you have to but I took some marketing courses from SAIT and benefit a lot from it.
I started participating at shows since my second year at ACAD and successfully curated the very first group show in my 3rd year for my department. It was a huge success. I have sold over 50 paintings since then and I guess all the success is motivating me to move forward.

Never give up or stop if you have difficult to move forward, believe yourself and keep moving. If you are a truly gifted, you still need to work hard for the other 90% of the success. Also you MUST have huge passion on whatever you are doing because that is something will motivate you in a long run.
Many people asked me how I can manage to paint and work at the same time, maybe they think I have no life, but doesn't true meaning for life is doing whatever you are love to do? I think I am very lucky person because I love what I do!

GN: Do you have any projects in the works?
AQ: At this moment, I am working as a graphic designer and busy with my personal clients. Also I got a cat recently, her name is ShiShi and so far we are very much in love with each other! But I am still trying to get into shows and galleries. I am having another solo show at Art Central from September to October. And I have some travel plans coming up since Summer is around the corner. I also want to get some freelance work for some bigger fashion related editorial companies. So busy life but I love it!!!

Sale Frenzy!

In this day and age, everybody's running around with the heads cut off in fear of the recession!
In my opinion, this is the perfect time for every lover of fashion to take a dip in their pockets and spend time scouring for pieces that are synonymous with who they are and who they would like to be. Things are changing in the world people and fashion is becoming cheaper, it wouldn't look that way after a recent increase in the prices at Louis Vuitton but sales are happening and styles are becoming more accessible! My weekly trip to Winner's confirms this for me.

So anyway with all that said I need to make a dash to Sterling Shoes in Northland Village Mall (5111 Northland Drive NW) they seem to be having a blow out sale!

Word is the sale has styles at $30 or less!

LGFW Review: Andy Thê Anh, Joe Fresh Style, Gaudet, Cheri Milaney, Comrags and Pink Tartan.

It was another packed day last Wednesday and although we weren't down there, anticipation for the Andy Thê-Anh show and Joe Fresh Styles show had me checking Twitter statuses and The National Post like a maniac!

Andy Thê-Anh

Highlights: Jeweled Tights and Fur.
Hair: The flattened bouffant.
Colours: Beige, Aqua Green, Grey, Forest Green, Aqua Blue and Watermelon pink.

Joe Fresh Style
Ever since Joseph Mimran started the Joe Fresh Styles label, Superstore hasn't been the same. I applaud the label for bringing fashion to the masses in an affordable way.

The collection was simple and as daring as department store fashion can be!

Colours: Black, white and grey
Highlights: Knee length socks, large square prints and romantic blouses.

Gaudet

I don't know much about the Gaudet label, but this was probably one of my favourite collections shown at LG Fashion Week. The collection was very dreamy and whimsical. It was very abstract but also had flowery accents that were subtle yet bold. I love pieces that can be hung on walls and the collection from Gaudet was art in itself.

Cheri Milaney
Cheri Milaney took a very different approach to her collection. Instead of professional models, Milaney used real everyday women to show off her collection. This tactic is always good as it shows that her designs are made for every day women.

Comrags
It is very important to know the history behind designers in Canada. I am a new learner as i'm sure a lot of our readers are and I cannot get enough of the history of fashion designers in Canada!

Pink Tartan

Kimberley Newport-Mimran, yes married to Joseph Mimran, created Pink Tartan in 2002. She is not only the co-founder but the head designer and president. Pink Tartan is a simple label focused on practical clothes that can take women from day to dinner.

Stand outs for me were the pink patterned tights.

The name of this designer is Federica Moretti and has a vision that I am loving to bits!

I love hats, but these totally remind me of 1960's French hats and head bands! There are hoods for men that look 17th century to me but in a modern kind of way.

I don't know what else to say other then you must check all the other stuff out. Its amazing!

At Toronto Fashion Week, it was a little nerve wracking having to explain that you do not work for that big label company but are instead doing things for yourself and making the necessary moves required to take your independent self to the next level without asking for a job or assistance! I'm in love with visionaries and independents. People who do whatever it takes to do what they love and Tommy Ton is one of these people!

He's sharp, always on point and his shoe fetish has me going crazy with each post. My heart thuds as the page loads it's really honestly breath taking.

Shout Out Out Out Outs!

I have to have to have to give a shout out to the following people who made LG Fashion Week an experience to remember.

The first person I bumped into was Danielle Meder, fashion illustrator and fellow blogger! She is absolutely wonderful in person and spent the week working on water colour illustrations of the runway shows. Thanks to Danielle I am the proud owner of one of her postcards and yup you guessed it, it's from the Travis Taddeo show! Travis was kind enough to sign my envelope and I can't wait to get home to put it in a frame so it can become a permanent fixture in the CF office!

Shout out to Miss Sly!!! She is definitely a trooper and a strong believer in fashion! I loved meeting you Sly, you totally got me excited about being in Toronto. I wish I could have been there earlier in the week! See you next fashion week you and I must make it to all the parties!
The SubAdult Years blogger, Rebecca Leung was also a pleasure to meet. I like her because she's very direct and speaks exactly what is on her mind! She also has this post on race and ethnicity at Toronto Fashion Week! You must read it!

LGFW Review: Ula Zokowska, Travis Taddeo, Zoran Dobric, Joeffer Caoc, Lundstrom

Show One: Ula Zokowska
The second day of LG Fashion week had fashionistas in full drive with the first day of full showings. The day began with Ula Zukowska who has been in the Canadian fashion industry since 1994. Her collection was a blend of black and brown with a large addition of fur. Zukowska show opened LG Fashion week spectators to the trend of fur that appeared all week at the tents. The collection was based on the dark ages and a reflection of the current state of the economy. Zukowska's inspirations led to more structure in her pieces.

Show Two: Travis Taddeo

The first highlight of the day was Calgary native Travis Taddeo's collection who also reps Montreal hard! It was his first time to show at Toronto fashion week. The collection was perfect for the young urban, working fashionista. Perfect looks for a day at the office or hustling and bustling in the city preparing for shoots and editorial meetings. The versatility of the collection showed that he had the working girl and guy in mind. All looks presented would not only work for chic workers on the go but hold up once the work day is done and drinks are in order!

For his fall 09 collection, Taddeo shied away from the usual vibrant colors that are prevalent in his collections but stuck to safe, workable colors, black, white and blue with a hint of gold here and there. Boys remained in skinny black pants or white straight leg pants while ladies were in skinny pants with knee pad sections and short mini skirts. I loved this collection and in all honesty can see the Calgary Fashion team all ooh and aahing over the pieces in the collection.
Perfect for the working fashionistas in the industry.

Show Three: Zoran Dobric

The next collection of the day was by Zoran Dobric. Dobric is a very hard worker. Do not underestimate this humble and at times shy designer. In 2008, Dobric began working towards his whole sale line that can be found in stores in Toronto and for his fall 2009 collection the designer has strengthened his collection and featured his usual take on futuristic tribal prints and stuck to black, white, blues and purples.

Show Four: Joeffer Caoc

Joeffer Caoc is a very established member of the fashion industry. Labeled as one of the seven from the "Group of Seven" by the FDCC, Caoc's collection was simple and clear.

Show Five: Linda Lundtröm

Unfortunately we missed the come back of Linda Lundstrom who filed for bankruptcy earlier on in 2008.

LGFW Review: David Dixon: Fall 2009 + Barbie Collection

The Show Love LG Fashion Week in Toronto got a kick start with the reveal of David Dixon's Fall 2009 Collection and Barbie Collection. Dixon's Barbie inspired collection comes after the reveal of designs by Michael Kors, Badgley Mischka and Vera Wang who were some of the designers picked to dress 50 models in Barbie inspired couture. The addition of the Barbie theme LG Fashion week was a nice touch at including a theme that has been prevalent in fashion weeks around the world as Barbie celebrates her 50th anniversary.

Day 4 LG Fashion Week

It's been go go go and I have finally made it to LG Fashion Week.

I can't begin to explain how much of an honour this is for Calgary Fashion.
In the beginning it was clear that of course there are glitches in the system of the way things work but to be surrounded by a majority of Canada's most influential people in fashion is more than I can ask for.

From Calgary, I have run into Lara Presber and Paul Hardy was on site but I must have missed him. I also witnessed the final collections of the Project Runway Contestants. I'm not allowed to say much about the show but I can tell you that each designer has done a phenomenal job.

Aime Luxury was an interesting first show for a collection, of course not everybody can be the big cahuna with their first collection showing but Aime held up and had a couple pieces that i'm sure will delight.

It's mayhem mayhem and more mayhem, what does one do when Coco Rocha walks by followed by Iman and all her people other than stop in your tracks and drool.

Very very powerful women and men in the building.

There are so many bloggers out here and I have finally met Danielle Meder at Final Fashion, I'm also running into fellow bloggers of our scale and it's honestly more than I could ever ask for.

I am shy and timid at the moment but I think the reality of what could be the future for Calgary Fashion is not only exciting but inspiring.

Toronto Fashion Week: Day 2-3

There are a couple things I have been surprised by while attending Toronto Fashion Week. Being out in Calgary, there are certain notions and expectations of Canada's one true fashion affair. Excitement, spirited discussions, and the united celebration of Canada's talent I once attached to Toronto Fashion Week have shriveled.

Sitting in the audience, I was shocked at the number of unoccupied seats; a minute before most shows we are continually instructed to move a row forward. The Toronto Fashion Week volunteers standing at the runway's entrance have also stopped asking attendees for their reservations. The uncontrolled swell of people making their way through the small entry to the runway reminds me of Chinook on the weekend.

During the shows I also noticed a general lack of enthusiasm in the front row, 0ne of the only rows where seats are almost always spoken for, where madly, texting fingers is an epidemic. I am unsure whether the attempt to look uninvolved is a goal during Toronto Fashion Week attendees, some grotesque mannerism the media has inappropriately assigned to fashion folk, but I find it offensive and saddening.

The general lack of enthusiasm in Toronto regarding fashion week is disheartening. Not only is it unfair to Canada's bevy of talent such as Linda Lundstrom, David Dixon, Joeffer Caoc, Andy The-Anh, and Travis Taddeo to name a few, but perpetuates this unnecessary inferiority complex running rampant when Canada is compared to established fashion centers like New York. Yes, Canada is no where near London, Milan, Paris, or New York but do we have to be?

The media seems less enthused about Toronto Fashion Week, that is punctuated by the complete lack of advertising involving the event and cynical articles found in local papers. Canada is making the decision for designers to leave the country easy. Yes, we might not be New York, but no that does not mean we have a disadvantage. Rather than trying the emulate the fashion centers, why not carve out a niche and develop a program that funds, supports, and gives Canada designers the opportunity to showcase their talents in a manner that is appropriate to our country?

PRC 2 Episode 8 Reactions and Q+A

Very rarely do I let my judgments get in the way, but as a show progresses you begin to get a feel of the people that are genuine and the people that rub you up the wrong way. For me in this show I have a very hard time believing that Kim Cathers and Genevieve Graham are real. They spend most of their time bickering away on screen about their views on other designers as opposed to working and focusing on the challenge at hand.

The reactions to this weeks episode in which the designers were given the task of making a dress for supermodel Coco Rocha brought out some of the wost behavior in some of the contestants.
It is important for a designer to keep their togetherness at a certain level. Kim and Genevieve are portrayed as ultimate divas and Genevieve's cockiness has not been welcomed by the general public.

Some of the comment reactions to Genevieve's blog post on the Project Runway website are shocking and if anything the people are making it known that such behavior from a designer is intolerable.

"Oh my! My gut wants to just stick it to your terrible attitude and your mean-girl-esque persona and just shower you with so much trashy trash....but then I would be just like you.
I just feel sad for you. Your behavior really embarrassed me - as a woman, as a successful Vancouver professional. I knew I was good at my job - pretty confident - like yourself (I am on a mat leave now - I want it all!). But I could never ever spew such venom towards a colleague, toward a contemporary. What 30 year old trash talks contemporaries who are succeeding in the same field as them? It confused me. You're a 30 year old "professional" on TV!! You don't need to treat people like garbage and insult them," said a commenter under the name Vancouverite

Oh my!

Well with all the attitude, Genevieve was given the boot with Sunny winning another challenge! He pushed himself out of his comfort zone and performed at his constant level of excellence.

It is down to the final four, Adejoke, Jessica, Sunny and Kim.

Anyway here is our interview with Genevieve from this morning.

CF: Hi Genevieve, can you tell us a little bit about your fashion background please?
GG: Well I graduated in 2000 winning designer of the year and then I worked on anew line and I was doing that for three, four years and then I was approached by the owner of Obaaki to design with her and I was a designer there for about 4 years and I did 7 collections and I left there about a year ago.

CF: Were you disappointed to leave the show?
GG: Sure I was disappointed but I was really happy with my work and I stood behind everything I did, fashion is subjective and it’s about what they want or what they like but it’s not a big deal.

CF: What was the most difficult thing for you in the show?
GG: Time constraints, they were really difficult for me I’m a very sort of slow and meticulous worker so I don’t work well when I’m having to rush things, I cut corners I like to make sure everything is perfect and well done and we didn’t have time to do that so rushing things was difficult for me.

CF: Did you get on with any body else in the house other than Kim?
GG: Oh yeah we were all really good friends they just didn’t show a part of it, we all got on really well, you are under such crazy circumstances and pressure you are bound to snap you know at anybody but we all got along really well, they don’t show when we come home and have some wine and we all make each other food and sit around and relax and talk and hang out. I was really close with Margarita and really good friends with Christy we are good friends now.

CF: Do you feel they portrayed you in a negative light.
GG: No I don’t think it’s negative it’s how people want to take it, if confidence is considered negative then that is unfortunate. In this industry you have to have a certain level of confidence this is one of the toughest industries out there this is not acting and if you aren’t confident then you just wont be able to sell it you know. I’ve had a very successful career and I want to continue to have a successful career and I don’t think you can do that without having confidence and like I said they didn’t show the other side of me where I was laughing but you know they show everybody one sided everybody has a complexity to their personality. I think everybody was represented accurately it’s just one sided, too bad they didn’t show more stuff but I guess that doesn’t make for good TV.

CF: How was it working with Brian Bailey?
GG: Brian Bailey, I thought of him as my dad away from home, he’s a lovely person, he was a good source of support through all of this he would calm me down when things were going crazy he was really good at that.

CF: Can you tell me about your label?
GG: I’m currently selling my collection in a few stores in Vancouver, my concept is a little different I don’t do collections I do one offs every piece is individual every piece is unique it may look similar but there is something different to every piece.
It’s a high price point but I think people are wanting something a little more hands on these days. The concept is going over really well I’m really proud of it. I like the fact that I touch every piece, no two pieces are the same and no two women are the same.

CF: You are really into draping, is that something you always do, I don’t know anything about draping is it just part of your aesthetic?
GG: Yeah there are two ways to making clothing one of them is by making patterns and the other is by draping, you can mix the two it’s just another form of making clothing and that’s the aesthetic I like.

Long Over Due PRC2 Update

Hey guys I've been ridiculously ill over the past week and have only just mustered up enough energy to actually get some work done!

In anticipation of the Project Runway designer runway show tomorrow in Toronto I am leaving you with the last two contestant Q+A's who have left the show.

The week before was a heart breaking one that brought tears to every single soul as the designers shed light on cancer while working with survivors of cancer for an auction.

Jason Meyers was the designer to leave who was strongly criticized as being a gimmicky designers.

We had a chat last week about his experience on the show and where the rest of 2009 will take him.

I've been doing these interviews since the program aired and I can say today that Jason Meyers was very interesting to speak to. He had me laughing and chuckling! It is clear that he is extremely passionate about what he does and how he does things.
I'm pretty excited to meet Jason on Thursday and possibly schedule some time to see some of his works in person! Whoo!

CF: Hi Jason, Can you believe you lost to Post-Its?
He chuckles! People keep calling me asking me “Oh are you okay?” says Jason Meyers, Project Runway’s latest contestant to get off the show. He’s chirpy on this Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s episode had the contestants work with cancer survivors to create a dramatic artistic gown. The challenge had the designer hopefuls cutting, gluing and "postitting" for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

JM: First of all I didn’t film it last night so any emotions that were there I had time to get over, you know it’s coming, it’s the inevitable,cos like last week I was like “uhhhghhh next week is the week! It came…shit!” He chuckles.

I was really pissed , that was my whole thing I was like I don’t wanna go off on Post-It’s man! I mean I was really proud of everything else I did there. I honestly think it was an unfortunate situation for the sensitive breast cancer survivor models I don’t think that was um.. "he hesitates," I think we should have been able to make something really beautiful and really show our talent for that situation. But you know it was challenging it was a competition and it came down to Post-Its and it’s an unfortunate situation yeah but if I think I’d go out on anything it would be Post-Its.

CF: I'm sorry to hear you lost your model?
JM: She had breast cancer and she went through chemo and went into remission and it came back. So when I met her she was still in treatment or being treated for it a second time and she was saying it was taking a hard toll on her body.
'People are like was it sad working with women in that situation?' I think of it more of an inspiration, I think they really give you a different aspect to look at life and about what's really important you know, because when it came down to it we were just making frickken dresses from Post-It notes…So you know really it was actually, like I said if I would go out on anything it would be something like that and I don’t have a problem with it. Everything else I did I am really proud of and I had the opportunity to show the country what I can do and hopefully build my business from there.

CF: Tell us a little bit about your fashion history? It seems like you have done a lot of work in the fashion industry?
JM: I went to the Academy of Design and I’ve had my own line for 3 years now, and I’ve done some work in styling but nothing really to talk about. I know a lot of people in the industry because I’ve been in Toronto for 13 years now, I think I have a really good network here and meet a lot of new people and a lot of good talent.

My whole thing was I wanted to win, my whole thing was building my brand and right now it’s about coming from a business background it’s all about selling numbers and selling in a business that I can stay afloat in and that I’m passionate about and that I really love. When it comes down to it the creative industry…It’s tough, in Canada it’s tough, but it makes it worth it where it all works out, for me it was brand exposure and recognition so I could get out there and selling more units and be a striving successful Canadian designer.

CF: How did you even get into fashion?
JM: I was just passionate about it. I didn’t think growing up in Hamilton, being the straight up Catholic kid… I never honestly thought it was a career choice, because when I was in school it was science, geography etc and I was always stylish and liked to wear the new stuff but once I grew up I was like you know what why don’t I do this?

CF: How did you feel when your designs were labeled as “gimmicky” did you do anything to try and change that?
JM: You know I honestly feel looking back on this, I have…nicely put, I have respect for Brian Bailey for being in the industry, with his longevity and where he has come from I respect. But as a mentor that wouldn’t be my first choice as a mentor. Unfortunately I believe there is a couple ways of saying things to people, there is constructive criticism or it’s insulting, I feel like in the show not once did he say anything good about anything I did. Even when you go through the blogs, it’s Jason this, Jason that, there was no need for him to put that name over our heads, you know what you are giving me a gimmicky challenge, ‘make a garment out of a wedding dress that’s a gimmick right there. What was I supposed to do just make a long flowy dress? So I think I explained I don’t design like that but you are giving me gimmicks, I was trying to relate it literally to what the challenge was.
I took it with a grain of salt though, it was a great experience and I’m branded now and I think that’s more important than anything like you just said people may feel that you are a gimmicky designer, ah you know what I shouldn’t have just gone roar!!!

CF: Do you feel time was a big challenge in the competition?
JM: Time was a huge challenge, you get a budget and 20 minutes to shop for fabric and then you have to be creative in every challenge. It was really challenging knowing your body can go through that and keep working through it. I don’t do collections like that you get into thinking things out methodically, you envision it and then you start building it. If you get $150 you have no room for mistakes. But it’s interesting to see what we can do as artists.
CF: Tell me about your label?
JM: Well the label is a high end women's line I used to do suiting and blousing but I’ve gone more in the dresses direction, LA red carpet, celebrity driven like our whole society is. Honestly there are a couple good things that came out of the show but the show was no hinder to what I do as a fashion designer. I won the challenge with Elisha Cuthbert and that validates what I do as a designer.

CF: You seem to have a good connection with women..
JM: I grew up with my mum and my sister, they were the two ladies I grew up with so that made me understand how to relate and made me more comfortable.

CF: What was Iman like?
JM: She’s a diva but a diva in her own right. She’s been around since the 70s I believe she has paid her dues and I think she is cool but we didn’t get a chance to hang out with her one on one there was no 'just relax we are going to take you out for dinner'... but I think she’s cool.

CF: What do you think of Jessica’s progress as the show has continued?
JM: I have decided after last night and going to fashion week I’m not talking about any designers because I’m frustrated at how people were on the show because now they are all like oh his dress was ugly na na na na na and I think there are a lot of haters on the show and I’m going to point every single one of them out at Fashion Week! But after watching the show I’m like oh my gosh you guys are all assholes!

CF: Who do you think will win project runway Canada?
JM: The best designer!

CF: Who is??
JM: That’s all I have to say! You know not even, it could not even be the best designer but my opinion honest to God doesn’t even count.

CF: What are your plans for the rest of the year?
JM: I’m just working on my collection still, I’m going to try and work harder and recognition is huge and now I can walk into a store in Calgary and they will be like oh you’re Jason from the show and I’ll be like YES!! It’s opened a lot of doors for me and I’m just going to work that!
